Zoe Saldaña leads every version of this list. After that, the answer depends entirely on how you count and the differences are worth billions.

The rankings below use The Numbers’ worldwide leading-role data, compiled as of July 2026. That means cumulative worldwide theatrical gross for films where the actor held a leading role or was part of a lead ensemble. Voice work counts. Cameos and minor supporting parts do not.

Together, these twenty actors have appeared in films grossing a combined $231.69 billion.

The top 20

Read the average column, not just the total

The gross column tells you who was in the biggest films. The average column tells you something more interesting: how efficiently they got there.

Emma Watson has the highest average on the list at $580.7 million per film, from only 16 qualifying titles the smallest filmography in the top 20. Eight Harry Potter films and Beauty and the Beast did essentially all of it. She is the clearest demonstration of what a single correct franchise decision is worth.

Tom Holland is second at $553.3 million across 18 films, almost entirely Spider-Man and the Marvel films around it.

Samuel L. Jackson sits at the other extreme. He has 71 qualifying films, more than three times Watson’s count, and the lowest average in the top 20 at $205.8 million. He reached third place by working relentlessly across four decades rather than by picking well. Both routes end up in roughly the same place.

Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp follow the same pattern 59 and 54 films respectively, averages under $200 million, totals above $10 billion.

Why Marvel dominates

Avengers: Endgame is the highest-grossing film for twelve of the twenty actors here. That single film, at over $2.7 billion worldwide, does more work on this list than any other title.

The reason is structural. Marvel casts ensembles and keeps them for a decade. An actor in a recurring MCU role banks the full worldwide gross of every film they appear in, regardless of screen time. Do that across four Avengers films plus solo entries and the total compounds fast.

That is why Don Cheadle, Dave Bautista and Jeremy Renner appear on a list of the highest-grossing actors in history. It is not a comment on their drawing power. It is a comment on which films they were in.

Three actors here got to the top without that.

Tom Cruise is the most striking. He is sixth at $12.67 billion, generated almost entirely as the physically present lead of his own films. Mission: Impossible since 1996, plus Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick at over $1.45 billion, War of the Worlds, Minority Report, The Last Samurai, Jerry Maguire. He is the highest-ranked actor with no recurring Marvel role.

Will Smith reached $9.02 billion with no MCU involvement at all, on films marketed around his name Independence Day, Men in Black, I Am Legend, Hitch, Bad Boys. His biggest is Disney’s live-action Aladdin, which passed $1 billion.

Tom Hanks built $10.94 billion across dramas, comedies, historical films and the Toy Story franchise, where his voice role as Woody accounts for four enormous hits.

How Zoe Saldaña got to number one

Saldaña holds the record because she landed significant roles in three separate blockbuster franchises simultaneously, one of which is the biggest in film history.

Neytiri in Avatar. Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy and the Marvel films. Nyota Uhura in the rebooted Star Trek.

The original Avatar remains the highest-grossing film ever released at more than $2.9 billion. Avatar: The Way of Water added over $2.3 billion. Avatar: Fire and Ash pushed her past Scarlett Johansson in January 2026.

Four of her films have each grossed more than $2 billion the two Avatar sequels alongside Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame making her the first woman to achieve that, and one of very few performers of any gender.

Her lead is also the most secure on the list. Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are confirmed with Saldaña returning, currently slated for 2029 and 2031. Every Avatar film so far has cleared $1 billion.

About that “Tom Holland is third” story

In late August 2026, after Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed $2.33 billion worldwide, widespread coverage reported that Tom Holland had become the third highest-grossing actor of all time, behind only Saldaña and Johansson.

Those reports do not reconcile with the data above, and it’s worth being clear about why.

The Numbers’ leading-role ranking had Holland at $9.96 billion in July 2026, in fourteenth place. Adding Brand New Day‘s $2.33 billion brings him to roughly $12.3 billion which would place him around seventh, between Vin Diesel and Tom Cruise. Not third.

The reports placing him third cite a figure above $15.16 billion and describe him passing Chris Pratt at that number. But The Numbers has Pratt at $14.18 billion, roughly a billion lower.

Both sets of figures are circulating in credible outlets. They are not using the same dataset or the same inclusion rules some trackers count all appearances rather than leading roles, some treat ensemble credits differently, and Brand New Day is still in release with figures moving weekly.

The honest position: Holland has moved up substantially and is now comfortably inside the top ten. Whether he is third or seventh depends on whose methodology you accept, and no single answer is currently verifiable.

What this list does not measure

Four things worth stating plainly, because this ranking gets misread constantly.

It is not salary. These are ticket sales for films the actor appeared in. Nobody on this list personally earned these amounts.

It is not credit. No reasonable reading gives one performer responsibility for Avengers: Endgame. An ensemble film’s gross is attributed to everyone in the ensemble.

It is not inflation-adjusted. A 2019 ticket and a 1994 ticket count the same. On an inflation-adjusted basis the list reorders significantly and older stars climb.

It excludes streaming. Films released without conventional theatrical runs don’t count. Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction is a clear example a major hit that contributes nothing here.

And the inclusion rule changes everything. If cameo appearances counted, Stan Lee would rank near the very top on the strength of his brief Marvel appearances alone, at a reported figure above $30 billion. If all voice credits counted regardless of billing, veteran voice actors would displace most of this list. Restricting to leading and lead-ensemble roles is the choice that makes the ranking mean something about leading performers, but it is a choice, not a neutral fact.

What changes next

Zoe Saldaña has two more Avatar films confirmed. Her lead is likely to widen rather than narrow.

Tom Holland is the fastest riser on the list by a wide margin. At 30, he is the youngest actor in the top 20, with the second-highest per-film average and by far the fewest films of anyone near the top other than Emma Watson.

Robert Downey Jr. returns to Marvel in a new role, which gives him a route back up.

Scarlett Johansson added Jurassic World Rebirth and remains within striking distance of first.
