Speed joined the HBO Max catalogue on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, as part of an unusually large first-of-the-month drop that also included The Revenant, Beetlejuice, Misery, Carrie, Rain Man, and Mission: Impossible.
If it feels like Speed is always arriving somewhere, that’s because it is. The film joined Max in February 2025, left HBO Max on February 1, 2026, turned up on Hulu that March, and has now returned. Licensing windows for 1990s catalogue titles rotate constantly, which is exactly why “where can I watch Speed” stays a live search query year after year.
What Speed actually achieved
Jan de Bont directed it in 1994, his first feature after a career shooting films as a cinematographer. Reeves plays LAPD officer Jack Traven. Dennis Hopper plays Howard Payne, an extortionist who rigs a city bus to detonate if it drops below 50 mph. Sandra Bullock’s Annie Porter ends up driving. Jeff Daniels, Joe Morton, Alan Ruck, and Beth Grant fill out the cast.

What’s easy to forget is that neither lead was an action star when it was made. Reeves had Point Break. Bullock had Demolition Man. Neither had carried a film like this. Speed made both of them, and their chemistry is the reason the premise never wears thin across two hours.
The sequel went differently. Speed 2: Cruise Control arrived in 1997 with Bullock returning and Reeves absent. It failed with critics and at the box office, and it effectively ended the franchise. A remake has been discussed periodically, but studio comments have consistently indicated that any new version would need both original leads involved in developing the idea, not just attached to it.

He made a brief appearance as John Wick in Ballerina in June 2025, describing it in an interview as a handoff of stewardship to the next generation of the franchise. His career has three distinct peaks, spaced roughly a decade apart. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure in 1989 made him famous. Speed in 1994 made him bankable. The Matrix in 1999 made him iconic. The logline: a smuggler trapped in a time loop must survive both mercenaries and sharks in the Caribbean, repeating the same day until he finds a way out. Ian Shorr wrote the script. Comparisons to Edge of Tomorrow and The Shallows have followed it around.
John Wick: Chapter 5 is confirmed with Reeves returning and Chad Stahelski directing, alongside producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee. There is no release date. Lionsgate’s motion picture chair has said publicly that Reeves and Stahelski have landed on a core idea they’re excited about, while declining to commit to a timeline. Some reporting has suggested a possible late 2027 release; other reporting says it’s too early to say. Treat any date you see as unconfirmed.
Caine, the Donnie Yen spin-off, has wrapped filming for a 2027 release, with Bill Nighy, Mason Thames, Dacre Montgomery, and Rina Sawayama in the cast. Reeves is not in it the first John Wick film without John Wick. Yen directs as well as stars.
Also in development: an animated John Wick prequel with Reeves attached, an adaptation of BRZRKR, the comic book Reeves co-created, and Constantine 2, which has been in pre-production for some time.
