The short answer: the film shows you a grave, never shows you a body, and that was deliberate.
Chad Stahelski shot a version where John Wick is unambiguously alive. He cut it. Test audiences hated it. What made it to screens instead is an ending that reads as a death but leaves one small door open and everything about John Wick: Chapter 5 now depends on which reading Lionsgate goes with.
Here’s exactly what happens, what the filmmakers have said about it, and where the ambiguity actually sits.

What happens at the end
John challenges the Marquis Vincent de Gramont to a duel. The terms are set at the Trocadero in front of the Harbinger, the High Table’s adjudicator: if John wins, he is released from his obligations to the Table and Winston is restored to the New York Continental. If he loses, both men die.
The Marquis, as is his right, names a second to fight in his place. He names Caine John’s old friend, blind, and the best marksman in the film. Caine has no choice. The Marquis has been controlling him by threatening his daughter’s life throughout.
The duel is set for sunrise at the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur in Paris. To reach it, John has to survive the night and climb the 222 steps up the hill. The Marquis sends waves of assassins to make sure he doesn’t. John is beaten down the stairs more than once. Caine, who needs John alive long enough for the duel to be legal, ends up fighting alongside him.
They make it. Both men are handed duelling pistols and begin at 30 paces, closing after each exchange. They wound each other repeatedly without killing. Then Caine’s shot puts John on the ground.
The trick with the last shot
The Marquis walks over to finish it. He takes Caine’s pistol, declares Caine’s obligation fulfilled and his daughter free, and prepares to deliver the killing shot himself.
Winston stops him. On that final exchange, John never pulled the trigger. Under the rules of the duel, that shot is still his. The Harbinger confirms it. John raises his pistol and kills the Marquis with a single shot to the head.
This is the part worth sitting with, because it’s the entire point of the film. John spent four movies solving problems by shooting people. He wins the last one by not shooting by taking a bullet from a friend rather than firing at him, and holding his round for the man who actually deserved it. Caine walks away free. His daughter is safe. Winston gets his hotel back. John gets his name cleared.
Then John walks partway down the steps, sits, says his wife’s name, and stops moving.
The grave scene
The final sequence is Winston and the Bowery King in New York, at a headstone beside Helen Wick’s. It reads John Wick Loving Husband, the epitaph John requested earlier in the film.
Two details in this scene matter.
Winston places his hand on the stone and says farewell to John in Russian, calling him his son. As he does, a Ruska Roma tattoo is visible on his wrist a reveal about Winston’s own origins that the franchise had never made explicit.
And John’s dog, present at the graveside, suddenly lifts its head as though it has heard something.
Stahelski has confirmed that the dog’s reaction was intentional. He wanted the scene to carry some mystery.
The case that he’s dead
The film’s own logic points this way, and so did its makers’ intent.
Keanu Reeves has said that the reason to make Chapter 4 at all was death specifically John Wick’s death, as the only route to his peace and his freedom. He and Stahelski cited the Hagakure, the samurai text by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, as the film’s guiding influence: the idea of living well in order to die well.
The narrative agrees. The film repeatedly states that John’s enemies regenerate faster than he can kill them, and that the only exit available to him is death. He gets a grave next to his wife with the inscription he asked for. Every open thread Caine, Winston, the Continental is resolved.
If John is alive, the ending means considerably less.

The case that he’s alive
And yet.
No body is shown. The film cuts from John slumped on the steps to a headstone. Nobody sees him die and no burial is depicted.
The dog looks up. Stahelski placed that beat there on purpose and said so.
The alternate ending exists. Stahelski told Empire that he shot a version in which you see John Wick at the end of the film, alive, with no ambiguity at all. He and Reeves preferred the version that made it into cinemas, but they filmed the other one during additional photography.
Winston is Ruska Roma. The reveal at the grave hands the franchise a mechanism. Faking a death is exactly the kind of thing this organisation, and this character, could arrange.
The rules already allow it. John has been declared dead before in this franchise and returned.
What Reeves and Stahelski actually said
This is the part most explainers skip, and it’s the most useful evidence available.
On the alternate ending, Stahelski told Empire that the theatrical version was what he and Reeves wanted, but they shot one where John is clearly alive. Test audiences, he said, strongly preferred the ambiguous version. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he put it more bluntly: they ran a single test screening with the survival ending and the audience rejected it hard, which confirmed the original instinct was right.
Reeves, asked shortly after release whether he’d return, said he’d have to lean on never saying never.
Stahelski has separately described the state of play on the Happy Sad Confused podcast: ask Reeves whether he’d do a fifth film and the answer is an immediate yes, followed straight away by admitting neither of them knows what it would be.
That was 2023. John Wick: Chapter 5 was confirmed in April 2025, with both men attached. Which means the question stopped being whether John Wick is dead and became how the fifth film handles it.
Stahelski was also reported to be assembling an extended cut of Chapter 4 that might include the alternate ending. No such cut has been released.
The post-credits scene
There is one, and it’s short.
Caine, now free, walks through a crowd carrying flowers to meet his daughter. Akira — the concierge of the Osaka Continental, and the daughter of Shimazu Koji, whom Caine was forced to kill earlier in the film — moves through that same crowd holding a knife.
She had sworn vengeance on the subway ride out of Osaka. The scene cuts before anything happens.
It sets up the Donnie Yen-led Caine spin-off, which follows the character after the events of Chapter 4 and has now completed filming. Whether Akira’s confrontation is resolved there is unconfirmed.
Note that Caine’s daughter and Akira are two different people. Several outlets have conflated them, which makes the post-credits scene considerably more confusing than it is.
What this means for Chapter 5
Nothing has been confirmed about how Chapter 5 addresses the ending. There is no script, no release date, and no announced plot.
What is known: Reeves stars, Stahelski directs, and Stahelski has indicated the fifth film will be substantially different rather than a straight continuation. The alternate ending gives Lionsgate a clean path back if it wants one, and the theatrical ending gives the filmmakers a reason to do something stranger — a prequel structure, a time jump, or a story that treats John’s death as fact.
Given that both men spent four films resisting the obvious choice, the second seems more likely than the first.
John Wick: Chapter 4 ending questions answered
Is John Wick dead at the end of Chapter 4?
The film strongly implies it. John is fatally wounded in the duel at Sacré-Cœur, sits down on the steps, says Helen’s name and stops moving. The final scene shows his grave beside his wife’s, inscribed “Loving Husband.” However, no body is ever shown and no death is depicted on screen, leaving the ending deliberately ambiguous.
Did John Wick win the duel?
Yes. After Caine’s shot brought him down, the Marquis attempted to deliver the killing blow himself. Winston pointed out that John had not fired on the final exchange, meaning the shot was still legally his under duel rules. John used it to kill the Marquis, winning the duel, clearing his name and freeing himself from his obligations to the High Table.
Why didn’t John Wick shoot Caine?
He deliberately withheld his final round. Doing so meant taking Caine’s shot without returning it, sparing his friend, and preserving one bullet for the Marquis who, by the rules of the duel, would have to step forward to finish him. It also freed Caine from the Marquis’ threats against his daughter.
Does John Wick: Chapter 4 have a post-credits scene?
Yes. Caine, now free, approaches his daughter carrying flowers, while Akira daughter of the Osaka Continental manager Caine was forced to kill moves through the crowd holding a knife. The scene ends before the confrontation, setting up the Caine spin-off film.
Was there an alternate ending to John Wick 4?
Yes. Chad Stahelski confirmed to Empire that an ending was filmed in which John Wick is clearly shown alive, removing all ambiguity. It was shot during additional photography and tested with an audience, who rejected it strongly. Stahelski and Keanu Reeves had preferred the ambiguous theatrical version from the start.
